Like other republics of the Soviet Union at the time, Ukraine had its own anthem, which was in use until it declared independence from the Soviet Union in 1991. The music was composed by a group of composers led by Anton Dmitriyevich Lyebyedinyec; the original lyrics to the anthem by Pavel Tychina were changed slightly by Mikola Bazhan in 1978 when a reference to Stalin in the second verse was changed.
