The local anthem of this British colony, “My St. Helena Island”, was heard on St. Helena’s radio station and is played when the RMS St. Helena leaves port.
The song was written by Dave Mitchell, an American who was working on Ascension Island (a dependency of St. Helena). Dave was asked to write a song for the Saints (people from St. Helena) living on the island; he was reluctant at first, having never been to the island proper. However, after studying postcards from the island for a day or two, the song occurred to him, and was written that night. The song, which is a country-western type of song, was recorded back in the United States and mailed out to St. Helena.
