In 1991, following the collapse of the Somali government, the northwestern region of the country, formerly known as British Somaliland and then the State of Somaliland before merging with Somalia in 1960, broke off to become a self-delcared independent nation (which has not been internationally recognized). The anthem, adopted in 1997, is from a Somaliland poet, playwright and author.
