Like other republics of the Soviet Union at the time, Georgia had its own anthem, which was in use until Georgia regained independence in 1991. The original lyrics praised Stalin, who was born in Georgia; however, like the other Soviet republics that had references to Stalin in their anthem (which was almost all of them, as they were given their anthems while Stalin was leader of the USSR), the lyrics were changed to remove the references to Stalin after his death. (The new lyrics are seen in the lyrics and sheet music to the right).
